Formed in 1994, the Havering Astronomical Society is based in Cranham, Essex and contains about 40 members. The HAS was formed by members of an astronomy evening class (taught by Konrad Malin-Smith of the Croydon Astronomical Society). When the course finished it was decided to create a new astronomical society to allow the members to continue meetings on a regular basis. Meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at Cranham Community Centre, Marlborough Gardens, Cranham, Essex. 7.30 pm. Click HERE for a map showing the location of our venue.  
     
     

 

Meetings

The HAS meets every third Wednesday of the month. During the course of a year there are many activities available, such as outings to places of astronomical interest like the trip to Herstmonceux Science Centre and the Jodrell Bank radio telescope facility, and many "star-party" meetings at a dark-sky site in nearby Weald Park, Brentwood. A monthly newsletter is distributed to members at every meeting (the newsletter is sent by post to those unable to attend the meeting). In June 1998, 17 members of the HAS travelled to the Jodrell Bank radio telescope facility in Cheshire (see left). A superb guide was provided, in the person of Professor Ian Morison, and members were shown all aspects of the Jodrell Bank facility. Excellent lectures and slide shows were also given. Recent trips this year have included a visit to the Mullard Radio Telescope facility at Cambridge. More pictures HERE

 

 

  
     
     
  Havering AS Astrophotography Meetings

An astrophotography section allows members to discuss the finer points of this "black art", with members travelling to darker skies away from town to put theory into practice.   Announcement

This year's Public Observing event at Weald Park, Essex, is on Saturday 17th April (7-9 pm) or. if cloudy, on Sunday 18th April. There will be talks and presentations by members of Havering Astronomical Society. To book or check details on the day please phone 01277 261343. Entrance is £3.

Check here for news of  Open Evenings at the University of Hertfordshire's Bayfordbury Observatory. The next event is Friday 5th March 2010. This is a good chance to look through most of the telescopes there (including many 16" scopes) and there will be lots of talks, planetarium shows and fun events for all ages.
